KUTING’s Contributions to the Development of
Children's Literature in the Philippines:

KUTING’s main contribution to the development of children’s literature in the Philippines is the production of quality literary works for children.  A good number of KUTING members have penned works that have been recognized and been given awards.  A number of these award-winning pieces were first “workshopped” by KUTING members during GA’s.  Thus, the comments and suggestions given by fellow members have clearly guided the process of text-revision that led to the creation of remarkable works of literature.

Since 1996, KUTING has also contributed to the development of children’s literature in the Philippines as an active ally of the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY).  Through its partnership with PBBY, KUTING has been eagerly sharing its resources by giving free creative writing workshops for kids and participating in the annual national Children’s Book Day celebrations.

KUTING has also been participating actively in “Meet the Author” sessions in many schools all over the country and at all levels of education.  These sessions inspire children/students to write their own stories or poems.  Discussing stories with the authors also deepen students’ appreciation for literature and develop respect for the writing profession.

Together with private companies and institutions, KUTING has also impacted the development of children’s literature by giving workshops and lectures to adults who would like to pursue writing for children.

KUTING has also been invited and has actively participated in evaluating and judging children’s literature entries or nominees.  These activities have allowed the group to contribute to the process of evaluating, analysing and critiquing Philippine children’s literature.
